522 Unit 3 Activity 3: Reflection on Dr. Veletsianos’ Podcasts

As LRNT 522 draws to a close, our MALAT cohort of 2021 has many things to think about and reflect on. This month we were asked to create some questions regarding research for Dr. George Veletsianos, full Professor in the School of Education and Technology at Royal Roads University. Veletsianos has provided his answers via podcast, and we have been asked to reflect on them and post our responses.

There were two questions that I was particularly interested in. First, “In respect to learning and teaching online, lots of research has been done, resulting in the models we have been learning about through LRNT521 and LRNT 522. Has any research been done to dive deeper and look at generational adaptability in digital learning environments?” and second, “How do you determine the scope and depth of literature to focus on when approaching a literature review related to your research question?”

I appreciated Dr. Veletsianos’ hesitancy to answer the first question as we will be exploring it through debates next month in LRNT 523. Are their generational differences in the way that we learn in digital settings? Veletsianos encouraged us to investigate the terms digital natives and digital immigrants. So, I have.

Working with immigrants for over 20 years and living in Japan myself, I investigated Sree Sreenivasa’s definition as he is an immigrant and a digital immigrant who understands these two experiences well. Scree served as an academic administrator and professor in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and served as chief digital officer of the City of New York. Born in Japan and immigrating to the US, he has drawn parallels between being an immigrant and being a digital immigrant. Sree had definitions that resonated with my experiences. Navigating Sree’s twitter account I was able to piece together a little about what it means to be both. He describes that being an immigrant means that you “take nothing for granted.” Immigrants bring with them perspective and history. He goes on to say that immigrants ask questions. He stresses that being both a digital immigrant and immigrant himself has allowed him to understand more, teach better and anticipate where the technology may go. Technology changes quickly so perhaps we are all immigrants.

Dr. Veletsianos’ had a more direct response to the second question. He said that when addressing depth in a literature review, he tended to keep it “very tight” and then expand it until he found literature that was helpful. Yet when thinking about the scope of literature it was not so clear. He stated that if you can answer the question from the literature, the question has already been answered. He added that if this is so, is there a way that value can be added to the research already out there? This was a question that I have thought about many times. How would I know if the research I wanted to do was relevant? I feel a little closer to the answer.

Thinking about which path I will take next year and if I will be doing a thesis, I must think carefully. Would I be able to produce research that adds value to existing research already out there? This is quite daunting but if the next course proves to be as challenging and illuminating as LRNT 522, I will be ready to cross that bridge when I come to it.

  1. Great post, Sam. I really resonate with the perspective that “technology changes so fast, maybe we are all immigrants”! Being curious and asking questions is good advice for all of us.
