A fiction-based persona that illustrates how emerging technologies have impacted society and education in the not-so-distant future. How has technology intersected with HoYeon’s life during her first year in Canada and how has it compounded her learning? This short story is an insight into the challenges some newcomers and refugees to Canada face when trying to access services and education. How might we as educators better understand how they interact and interface with different technologies?

Case Study: HoYeon Jung

HoYeon is the daughter and only child of North Korean parents who labored as farmers on the outskirts of Kanggye City in a province that boarders China. Her parents never completed high school and there were no computers in their home. North Korean smartphones had started appearing in 2020 but only for the rich. During the Great Famine of 2022, she slowly watched her mother starve. After Kim Jong Un succumbed to the Omicron Variant, her father was “disappeared” during the 2023 protests. They took so many people who were never seen again. Thankfully her aunt took her in but with her own children to feed things were dire. HoYeon realized that if she stayed, she might not survive the winter. She thought to herself, “No matter how hard things get, still, I must live”. There was little food these days especially with the new variant starting to spread in the east. HoYeon decided it was better to take her chances and try crossing through the north mountains than to starve in the cold house with only a wood burning stove. There was almost nothing left to burn and nothing left of the forest that was once there. So, at the age of 17 she left.

It has now been three years since she left and today is the one-year anniversary of arriving to Vancouver, Canada. When she woke up she looked at her only photo left from her past. It was a photo of her and her parents at her junior high school graduation. They were so proud of her that day. It was almost 9:30, so HoYeon took out her smartphone and accepted her invitation for today’s lesson.

I was inspired from first hand stories of students I have met over the years and particular one North Korean refugee who I taught while I was living in Sapporo Japan. Her experiences touched me and gave me insight.

In addition to their stories, the readings that I have experienced in Unit 3 of LRNT 523 with Dr. Veletsianos at Royal Roads University guided my case study as it related to Edtech and its imagined futures. The article by sava saheli singh and Tim Maughan’s The future of ed tech is here, it’s just not evenly distributed  was of great help.

This is the start of HoYeon’s story. She will experience new things such as a personalized learning pathway, affective computing techniques with AI and augmented reality during her day of lessons. I humbly look forward to any help or advice you can provide.

Hi Sam – this is a great narrative, and the start of an evocative assignment! My only piece of advice is that you’re at around 300 words right now, so around 1/4 of the assignment completed before starting to discuss the new experiences that you mention (which should be the main focus). Beyond that, I look forward to reading the rest of this!

      Hello George!
Thank you for the feedback. I think that is excellent advice. I will have to shorten the beginning and jump right into technology and keep it there. The word count goes up so fast. I think being concise is not as easy.
      Sincerely,
      Sam

What an engaging narrative, Sam! I am intrigued to see what direction(s) you go in for the full paper. I wonder what digital fluency looks like for a person entering into North American learning from this background? Perhaps there are advantages to a fresh perspective and clean slate. Would awareness safety and protection of private information be a potential issue?
    Thanks,
    ~Alisha

      Hello Alisha,
Thank you for reading my blog post. I will be looking at and writing it as if Hoyeon was attending one of the welcome houses in Vancouver. These nonprofit organizations (except for the career colleges) have more stringent rules about student data and privacy so I will use these polices as guidelines.

    Hi Sam,

What a great and inspiring story. I am looking forward to reading more about HoYeon’s story and the future of ed tech, especially when it comes to newcomers and how technology is impacting their future.

      Thank you so much Stephanie.
Technology is already a huge barrier for many immigrants today. I think that there is a burgeoning awareness right now. Many of those in the field do not come from tech backgrounds so I think that is why it is especially important for those in edtech to be present and helping other educators and directors on boards making decisions.

    Hi Sam,
I am so curious about HoYeon’s story and wanting more details about the challenges that she encountered in getting to where she is today. I am also curious to know where does she want to go with her education and what are the barriers that may or may not prevent her from achieving her goal.

You mention that she will experience new things, is this related to learning English? Look forward to hearing more details.

      Hi Gail!
I will do my best to answer these questions but my concern is wordcount. I will try to give a little more information about her goals and future. As for her journey to get to Canada I imagine it to be like the woman Hyeonseo Lee or Joseph Kim.
Thank you for reading my blog.

Sam, an innovative approach and you have crafted such an intriguing persona in HoYeon Jung. What happens next to HoYeon Jung? What happens at the class/lesson she accepted and how is it different from how it is today in Vancouver? I am excited for HoYeon Jung and eager to read what happens next and how she experiences learning differently from her past.

Sharmila! I miss working with you and hearing your voice.
Thank you so much for reading my blog post. I have so much more work to do. The direction I must take next for HoYeon is that she will experience a full day at her school exactly one year after coming to Vancouver. She will have already had classes at the Welcome House but she will be reflecting on how far she has come with technology. She will have feelings of pride, nostalgia and sadness regarding all the new tech she is beginning to master.

    Sam,

This is such a cool focus, and I am really looking forward to seeing the final product! Your central character has such an intriguing worldview, and I am keen to see how her history and her experiences as a Canadian student come together.
