Mapping the use of technology based on Dave White’s approach was an interesting exercise. I have never taken the time to reflect or think about how it plays a role in my life. When Facebook first came out, I would update my status to air out my inner feelings, upload pictures from events/places I went to, tag all my friends in pictures, and I would spend hours going through/commenting on their pictures. Over the years, I minimized my presence online and gradually shifted from a “resistant” to a “visitor” approach to technology.
Currently, I use the internet, streaming devices, and social media platforms as research tools, a break from the real world, and to keep in touch with family/friends. The newest addition to this map is the blog and discussion boards. Those are a direct result of being part the MALAT program. It is challenging me to break out of my comfort zone and take a more proactive approach in curating a greater presence online. When looking at Dave Cormier’s alternative continuum, I fall on the opposite spectrum. My personal and professional presence predominantly fall on the digital continuum side, with only sprinkles on the analogue side. I felt that Cormier took a more holistic approach that also included a non digital aspect into the mapping framework. It would be an interesting exercise for me to do this again after I finish this program! How different would my map look? Would I feel differently about being a visitor as oppose to a resistant? Only time will tell.

Hi Eunice,
I really enjoyed learning a bit more about you through your Technology map.
I too take breaks from the real world, although, majority of my day is spent online, so I use books. I find reading a book for just 5 minutes, lets my “unwind”.
I really connected with your last thoughts, regarding doing this exercise again! I gave some thought with my post from how I previously would have perceived my usage to current day. I too would be so interested in doing this again and seeing the changes in my usage/habits.
Thanks for sharing 🙂

Hi Eunice,
I love your map! At first glance it seems like it’s digitally produced but I’m pretty sure I see a small trace of white-out which makes me think it’s done by hand, well done.
I had a similar experience when creating my map where I realized how I’ve changed quadrants from resident to visitor or from institutional to personal with the different digital tools over the years.
I also agree that it will be very interesting to revisit these maps a little ways down the road in this MALAT program because it seems to be changing on a daily basis right now.
Thanks, Dan
