Application Due Date: Monday, November 7, 2022
During the month of October and as the thesis application became available online, MALAT students began to refine their area of research and are encouraged to consider which stream they wish to explore in their second year of the master’s program. Below I reflect on my personal experience that led to my application and proposal submission to the thesis stream for MALAT 2023/2024.
The Thesis application consists of 12 questions, including the gimmie field “name.” The beginning stages included reading, reflecting and completing the first four questions. Since it was fairly recently since I updated my CV for the master’s program application, it only required minor updates, a quick grammar and spell check and adding any recent certificates as well as including my acceptance to the MALAT program at Royal Roads University. I completed all the questions that were based on my educational background and employment history. In addition, I created a planning checklist that I would use over the next several weeks as I compiled and refined my application, ultimately preparing it for submission.
It was becoming glaringly clear that my research question would need to be refined further to help me focus on literature that was relevant and fruitful. I started a document and began collecting artifacts that discussed my research question and offered me perspective about what I might be missing, strengths in the research as well as gaps that I should be aware of. My collection began with a compilation of 19 articles related to my thesis question, with the plan to add a couple of sentences to each as I read them over the next few months. See the reading list here. The early stages of my literature review were divided into two phases:
- Collecting articles and reading the abstract, introduction, discussion and conclusion.
- Summarizing key themes using a Miro board to start to discover trends in the research, patterns and highlight questions I have.
Research question:
What is the relationship between digital (data) literacy and perceived digital privacy and security among facilitators in the social service sector?
- Which factors should digital literacy be measured?
- What factors should digital/ data privacy and security be measured?
Furthermore, I am interested in learning about and applying for financial awards available for graduate students who wish to complete the thesis track and that aligns with my research interests. If accepted into the thesis stream, the two awards I am primarily hoping to apply for are the “Canada Graduate Scholarships – Master’s program” and the “BC Graduate Scholarship” at $17,500 and $15,000, respectively. Future posts will discuss the time, value and details needed to assess how funding can positively impact my contribution to the learning community.
