The following resident-visitor map shows what online services I use personally and institutionally while also showing where on the resident-visitor spectrum that I use the services. A visitor of a service is someone who uses the service as a tool but leaves little to no trace of the use that others can see, while a resident of a service leaves a record or even creates a persistent online identity. There is a smooth spectrum from visitor to resident.
I will discuss a few examples. My personal and work email are viewed by a small number of people, so they straddle the line between visitor and resident. I rarely look at LinkedIn, but I do have a profile there that is completely open, so it is much further to the resident side since I am establishing a persistent digital identity there. LinkedIn has both professional and personal information, so it straddles the personal-institutional line.
