The creation of my conceptual map took a lot of influence from the examples provided by Dave White in the “Visitors and Residents” page he has created (https://padlet.com/daveowhite/visitorsandresidents). In watching White’s “Just the Mapping” (White, 2013) I was able to think about the tools I use on a regular basis and how I use them. I found that many of the tools that I use institutionally sit in the middle between personal and institutional. The exception to these were tools like Outlook (which is contrasted by Gmail) and D2L which is an LMS system that is used exclusively for institutional work.
I found that the tools that I use for both are often the ones that do something very well. Google Drive is a great example of this in that I use it to keep shareable documents with co-workers and learners but also use it personally as a photo sharing service so that I can share with friends and family. These multiple intersections made me look at my personal connection and use of technology. I was surprised as I compared resident vs visitor and realized that, though on Twitter and Facebook I leave a large footprint, I am primarily a visitor with most technology tools.

I really like your map visually Jeff, it feels clear and organized and it makes me feel as though your presence in each area (whether resident, visitor, personal or professional) is intentional.

It’s interesting that you say that because it made me realized that I was using digital tools (Adobe) to actually create this map and didn’t actually include those on here. It made me wonder if I might have missed more of the tools used that really do sit near the center so I don’t think about it when I use it.
