When developing a good research question, it is important that it is focused, clear, and summarizes the issue that the researcher is planning to investigate. The purpose of a good research question will help “guide the research project and assist in the construction of a logical argument” (Center for Innovation in Research and Teaching, n.d., para.2). Here are some key characteristics that can help determine if you’re developing a good research question. A good research question:

  • Focus on only one issues and does not try to fit in too much
  • Requires analysis and thinking 
  • Does not have an obvious yes or no answer 
  • Is specific, focused and clear
