As part of the MALAT program, we have focused on the many benefits of Ed-Tech, but when completing the unit 3 readings, I was struck by some of the negative environmental impacts outlined by Selwyn (2011) in “Ed-Tech Within Limits: Anticipating educational technology in times of environmental crisis”.
For the last assignment as part of LRNT523 Foundations of Learning and Technologies, I will be taking a closer look at the potential outcomes of these impacts in the not-so-distant future if a considered and balanced approach is not taken now in the Ed-Tech space. As a result of the preliminary research I have done on the topic, I will focus my essay on three key impacts on the environment and the fallout associated with vulnerable populations: energy consumption, e-waste, and material mining, such as lithium and cobalt, associated with Ed-Tech.
