While I was learning about ethics in Research as part of the LRNT 522 Unit 3 PowerPoint Introduction to Research: Critical Reading and Writing (Zornes, n.d.). I have completed the Canada Research Chair Training Module on Unconscious Bias.

Key learning for me was learning about unconscious bias; how it can impact the peer review process and what methods can be integrated for mitigating the influence of unconscious bias.

(The Canada research Chairs, n.d.) defined unconscious bias as “an implicit attitude, stereotype, motivation or assumption that can occur without one’s knowledge or intention. Unconscious bias is a result of our life experiences.”

The module also provided different types of bias that may affect peer review such as gender bias, institutional bias, age bias, indigenous bias, language bias. It suggested that self-awareness is the first step to prevent bias, the training suggested taking the implicit association test in order to recognize self-bias.

Finally, the module suggested steps in order to prevent bias. (1) stereotype replacement (2) Positive counter stereotype imaging (3) Perspective-taking (4) Individuation
