As I listened to the tutorial from Melanie Wrobel, I was once more struck by the fact that “we don’t know what we don’t know” (Levy, 2019, 24.17). I imagine that I could listen to the tutorial another five times and still think that there is so much more to learn. If I stand back, and reflect on my learning at 30,000 feet, I acknowledge that…
- As it relates to copyright, regardless where the document originates, (i.e Germany), the researcher has to follow the copyright law of the country he/she resides in (i.e Canada). In Canada, the copyright law is based on the life span of the person (who created the document/video, etc.), plus 50 years.
- As part of the MALAT program, we must contribute to our blog on a regular basis. Although we may consider that our blog is a place to “practice and develop our academic voice” (Wrobel, 2016, 32.41) we have to ensure copyright laws are not broken. When researching information from a document/video to share on our blog it is always safest, from a risk management perspective, to paraphrase and cite and when required we can quote and cite. We need to ensure our quotes (and corresponding citations) are less than three percent of the excerpt size otherwise we are legally required to ask for copyright permission.
- As a subset of this, I learned that “people (those that have written articles, blogs, etc.) troll the internet looking to see if someone is using their work without requesting a copyright (Wrobel, 2016, 32.43).
- As researchers and students, in order to reproduce the work, a request for copyright permission is required. This can be completed by contacting the publisher to determine the owner of the article and request permission accordingly.
There is so much to learn and so much to know. As each day progresses in my MALAT journey, I become ‘just’ that little bit more proficient.
